Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the highest-streamed tune within six months. The track is a mixture of reggaeton, pop and rock not only brought renewed attention to reggaeton music but it also attracted attention to Latin music in general. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish mostly, and four others in 2016. During the height of Despacito's popularity, however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it onto the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 such songs. When Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists started to work with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together for the track MIA MIA (2018) in addition to Madonna and Maluma collaborated on Medellin and Medellin in 2019 In the year 2020, some Reggaeton musicians were expressing their displeasure with how the genre was moving towards the mainstream. Yet, a newer generation Rauw Alejandro, was keen to continue the evolution. It often featured elements from other genres and electronic dance.
