She went to the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church primary school. She attributed her love of music to her grandmother who gave her a taste of jazz when she was a child. The singer began performing with small groups in the Chicago area first performing in Cash McCall's band Lyfe and her boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka became married to Hassan in 1970.
